Link Year
Week 1:
This week has been an interesting experience, between moving in and making friends the balance between the social world and my homework has been an ever-present struggle in the back of my mind. Overall the first weeks central aspect could be boiled down to an attempt to find this balance.
As far as friends go it seems hard to not have friends at link year, everyone is so nice and it seems that there is no odd man out, everyone knows someone who at least has a common interest or similar personality. On the note of education we have had 3 great lessons this week from Don Ford, Adam Donyes and Kevin Smith. The lessons were very engaging but of all the things said over the last three days, one specific idea has stuck with me to the point of near obsession:
Writing Out Your Goals:
During his speech Don Ford told a story of a great man he knew who as a 15 year old decided he would write down all his goals. In total he wrote something like 150 goals and by the end of his life he had accomplished nearly all of them. Theses goals were not commonplace either. They were goals like climbing Kilimanjaro, running marathons and memorizing the whole bible. I realized that as a visual learner and a person who often needs reminders to stay on task that it would be highly beneficial to write out my goals. After some thought I have my first goals to add to my list:
1) Make a Short Film
2) Get Into Film School
3) Spend Time in the Word Every Day
4) Open and Run a Restaurant
5) Finally Launch My Friend and I's Clothing Line
Granted some of these goals will only be able to be accomplished in the far future, there are many smaller steps leading up to each of them that I should also devote some time to listing out.
Lastly, Don Ford said that once you have written your goals down you have to commit to yourself and to God that you will get them done and work tirelessly to achieve them.
